St Peter's Collegiate Academy named Basketball England West Midlands Educational Institution of the Year

St Peter’s Collegiate Academy has been named Basketball England’s West Midlands Educational Institution of the Year, recognising the academy’s outstanding contribution to the development of youth basketball.

The announcement follows a historic weekend of success for students and staff. Team Wolverhampton SLAM! Women, featuring St Peter’s student-athletes Ella O, Dorretta O-D, and Faith O, claimed their second consecutive YBL Women’s Division 2 Championship in dominant fashion, defeating Shropshire Warriors 80–27. Meanwhile, the newly-formed Team Wolverhampton SLAM! U15 Girls – which includes several other St Peter’s students – were crowned YBL U15 All-Girls Champions after a hard-fought 53–37 victory over Abingdon Eagles.

These triumphs build on a standout season for girls’ basketball at St Peter’s, with the school reaching the U16 Dynamik Schools National Quarter-Finals and finishing as U19 National Championship Finalists earlier this year.

In addition, many of the academy’s players continue to compete at a high level with Team Wolverhampton SLAM! U18 Girls, who finished joint 1st in the North Conference and are in strong contention for promotion to the Premier Division — the highest level of U18 girls’ basketball in the country.

Basketball England praised the academy for its inclusive approach, commitment to excellence, and the clear pathways it provides for young athletes to reach elite competition while remaining grounded in academic success.

Mr Douaine Anderson, Head of Basketball at St Peter’s, shared:
"We are honoured to receive this award, which reflects the academy’s deep investment in basketball across all levels. The recent successes are not just about winning — they’re about development, leadership, and creating opportunity. I’m incredibly proud of our students, staff, and partners for continuing to raise the standard for girls’ basketball in the West Midlands."

Coach Douaine Anderson holds the 'Basketball England West Midlands Educational Institution of the Year' award.

With elite performance, strong community ties, and a clear vision for future growth, St Peter’s Collegiate Academy is setting the benchmark for basketball development in schools.

The award comes at a time of exciting development for the Academy, with a brand-new school building opening in January 2026 as part of a major redevelopment across 80% of the site. These state-of-the-art facilities will further support the school’s mission to provide students with a modern, inclusive environment where they can thrive both in and out of the classroom.
